PL8 Visual Beams |
The Pukeko Centre is an exciting community-led development in the heart of Parklands, Christchurch. Prolam’s glulam timber beams played a key role in supporting the construction of a Multi-Use Sports Hall that’s now a versatile venue used by local clubs, schools and residents.
Prolam manufactured and supplied a total of 28 PL8 H3.2 treated visual grade glulam beams for the portal frames that run the length of the hall. These beams provide the necessary structural support for the expansive roof while enhancing the hall’s visual appeal with their warm, natural timber finish.
Tom Galloway, the Pukeko Centre’s Sports & Facilities Coordinator, says the exposed beams are one of the hall’s most admired features. Their presence gives the hall a sense of mana (power) and create an inviting and welcoming atmosphere central to the community’s vision.
Prolam’s commitment to local manufacturing and sustainable practices aligned perfectly with the Pukeko Centre Executive Committee’s commitment to supporting New Zealand businesses and championing environmental responsibility in the building’s design and construction.
The Pukeko Centre is more than just a building; it’s a symbol of community spirit and collaboration. As project partners, CGW Engineers noted, “We loved working on this project. It brought the community together, and Prolam’s beams are both practical and a symbol of that collaboration.”
The new sports hall has had a transformative impact on the community. For Parkview Primary School, it has provided a venue for full school assemblies for the first time in their history, fostering a sense of unity. The hall’s affordability and accessibility have also made it a go-to venue for a wide range of activities, from korfball and volleyball to corporate events, birthday parties and baby showers.
“The Pukeko Centre’s sports hall has brought our community closer together, providing a beautiful and versatile space for activities and events. The Prolam beams are one of the most talked about features. They are the perfect balance of structural support and aesthetic appeal. We’re thrilled with the outcome!”
